Club competition three — 2010
By Sam Highley, Editor
Judging for club competition three took place last Sunday 29 August, with around 25 beers to be judged across a half dozen or so styles. Some styles were notably unrepresented, such as the Belgian Tripel & Dubbel styles, along with Bohemian Pilsener, while others rarely attract entries, such as the Biere de Garde and Gueuze styles. We ended up with a couple of gold medals which was good to see, and, interestingly, they were both for high-alcohol styles. Over 60% of the beers entered achieved medal status, and at least one of the low scoring beers appeared to have been mislabeled (Richard's Imperial IPA), which was a shame.
As usual, the entries were judged against the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) guidelines, with each beer being scored on aroma, appearance, flavour, mouthfeel and overall impression, up to a maximum of 50 points. In this case, each beer was judged by three judges, with the individual scores added together to give a final score out of 150. Gold medals are awarded for 120+ points, silver for 108+ points and bronze for 95+ points. Here are the results:

Next up on the competition calendar is the ACT Amateur Brewing Championships.
Congratulations to all the other entrants. It’s great to see so many getting very respectable scores (especially if you leave out my crappier entries) and so many “new” brewers doing well.
As for mine: “…[Richard’s] low scoring [IIPA] appeared to have been mislabeled…”
Very kind of you to say, Sammy – but I have to admit that the bottling and presentation of that beer was complete and utter s**t, as it was for two more of my entries.
I cannot recommend highly enough to home-brewers (including myself) to avail themselves of the very useful information available on how to successfully bottle kegged beers. For example, the brilliant presentation at the most recent Canberra Brewers meeting (Thursday 2 Sept) – I look forward to the follow-up article, which I shall print and then Estapol to the front of my keg fridge.
Not only to prevent one from falling on one’s arse in competitions, but also just to be able to take beers to social occasions without appearing like a pratt.
Cheers,
Richard, a.k.a. Semaphore.
