ACT Amateur Brewing Championship – Results
By Mark Bilbrough, Competition Secretary
Wow, how huge was ACTABC 2011! The Canberra Brewers powered through judging 208 beers across 18 Categories and 81 styles…. in one day! 19 judges, eight stewards, and two pourers made probably what has been the biggest judging day in the Canberra Brewers history run so smoothly.
Canberra Brewers put forward their best beers to seek quality feedback, and to try and gain a top three placing in each category to qualify for the Nationals. I hope that all who had a role in the day enjoyed themselves – I was very proud of our club to see old and new members step up to be a part of making the day a great success. Special thanks to the Wig & Pen, and particularly the Wig’s Head Brewer Richard Watkins, for providing an awesome venue and fantastic support for the competition.
The judges had to work their way through between 20 and 40 beers during the day – although looking at some of the flights this looked to be a genuine pleasure (have a look at the Strong Lager category). Thank you to Richard Watkins, David Gilks, Ben Cas, Darryl Barbour, Jamie Harwood, Charles Newton, Craig Webber, Paul Haesler, Tom Dixon, Chris Duffy, Ross Mitchell, Peter De Vries, Michael O’Rourke, Tony Steeper, Stephen Nielsen, Dave Steel, Sam Highley, Matthew Stephenson, and Tim Hollis for their massive effort.
The Stewards poured and served nearly 700 glasses of beer and operated flawlessly during the day – Chris De La Rue and Steve Sargent poured the beers to give each their best chance on the judging table; and Adam Langan, Adrian Stiffle, Bruce McIntosh, Owen Andrews, Brian Molloy, Patrick Baggoley, Richard Fitzpatrick and Pete Collins helped out to deliver the same. I hope that all who were involved enjoyed the experience.
ACTABC 2011 was a sanctioned BCJP competition and the beers were judged against the AABC style guidelines. Gold medal beers score 120 or more, Silver 108 or more and Bronze 95 or more.
