September 2017 news and meeting preview
The trees are blossoming. This calls for a beer! Our next meeting is this Thursday, 7 September. Here are the deets:
Education: Off-flavour experience
A special one this month; we have our own Patrick Baggoley guiding us through a sensory training session! This is where we try a series of beers with and without specific off-flavour compounds, so you can do a side-by-side tasting of a beer with and without the added flavour.
Places will be limited, so please make sure to arrive early and take a seat to guarantee your spot! The session will start at 7.30pm sharp.
This is a great opportunity for new brewers wanting to learn more about the flaws that can be found in beer and is also an excellent way for experienced brewers and judges to further enhance their skills before the upcoming ACT Championships…
ACT championships
The biggest competition event of the year is less than a week away. Entries have closed, but we still need judges and stewards to make this possible. Please consider signing up, even if you are an inexperienced judge – the best way to learn is to dive in and do it. Judging is an iterative group process, and you’re almost certainly a better judge than you think you are!
And of course, anyone can steward! If you’re free one morning next weekend (especially if you’ve ever entered a beer into the ACT champs before!), please support the club and your fellow members by participating in the judging process.
Oktoberfest @ Zierholz
Prost! The club’s annual Oktoberfest celebration will be held on Thursday 5 October at Zierholz in Fyshwick, in place of the October club meeting. Doors will open at 7pm and dinner will be served from 7.45pm.
The event is limited to 80 people, so get your tickets now!
Further details, including info on the ‘Best of the Fest’ competition, can be found on the forum.
Six Pack Swap
No specific theme this week, so anything goes! Hop over to the forum if you’ve got a few bottles spare and like to get in on the swap.
Raffle swag
Some great raffle prizes for you this month, including:
- A 9.5L keg
- A growler
- A carbonation cap
- John Palmer’s How To Brew, 4th edition
- Fuller’s beer
- PACT goodies
No miracle boxes this month
Please note that the club miracle boxes won’t be at this month’s meeting, so anyone with kegs to share will have to save them for for Oktoberfest! Apologies for the inconvenience.
See you on Thursday…
Thursday’s club meeting will again be held at the Harmonie German Club in Narrabundah. 7.30pm sharp for the education session, followed by the usual club shenanigans.
