By Nick Wiseman, Editor

Two club members stepped up to the plate this month volunteering to showcase a beer each in the clubs very first Brewers Showcase on April 05.6935307392_3cd255b70d_c

Keenan Fahy and David Steel talked about their selected styles and how they reproduced the beers giving detailed explanations on every step of the way.

The members listened in with keen interest about the beers and the styles with many compliments  throughout the night.

Keenan provided his Saison while David supplied an American Brown which in his words “managed to get better on the drive to the meeting”.

Available to taste for all members on the clubs miracle boxes the beers went down a treat and had many questions from the floor wanting to know more.

Look out shortly for a dedicated story about the showcase and what it has to offer for the rest of the year.

In another big event for the club, plans for the International Brew Day were announced with a massive four-system brew off planned for May 5.

The day which will be hosted at Craig Webber’s (Stagger) house will involve a double batch using a HERMS system and single batches using a three-vessel gravity system, a RIMS system and BIAB.

Once the beers are ready its planned to do a blind comparison to establish once and for all the potential differences brewing using different methods.

The night also saw the clubs first competition winners for the year awarded their certificates with a special mention to Bruce McIntosh taking out the comp with his English Extra Special/Strong Bitter (ESB) who received a beer gun for his efforts.

Club Competition Secretary Chris De La Rue (Growler) gave an education demonstration on rehydrating dry yeast and making fresh yeast starters.

The session was well attended (it was upstairs in the bar area) by club members eager for Growler to explain how to best handle different yeast types and the associated pros and cons.

Interest was certainly there with plenty of questions from members interested in learning more while he demonstrated his methods and the tools of trade he uses at home.

The raffles were held with Greg Ward winning the main prize of the refractometer and members enjoyed the tastings of many homebrewed beers throughout the night.
